"Understanding if we deserve to be part of this OM": De Zerbi's comments on his team's "ups and downs"
Marseille's slump continues. After defeats against Sporting (2-1, Champions League Matchday 3) and Lens (2-1, Ligue 1 Matchday 9), the club from the south of France failed to return to winning ways on Wednesday night against Angers. Despite leading 2-1, Marseille conceded an equalizer in the 90th minute (2-2, Ligue 1 Matchday 10).
After a successful period, marked by five consecutive victories in all competitions between September 22 and October 18, the machine broke down.
"I'm not worried, but I'll tell you what I said to the players. Anyway, with the cameras, you'll know in a few months," Roberto De Zerbi said at a press conference. "Since I've been here, I have nothing to criticize the club for. They've always tried to raise the level, whether it's Frank (McCourt), Pablo Longoria, or Medhi Benatia, who are all trying to make changes in many areas with a lot of courage."
"We're trying to push OM to the next level," the Italian coach continued. "So now we need to understand if we deserve to be part of this OM team, whether it's me or the players. We need to know if we want to compete with PSG, or if we have ups and downs and don't deserve to be part of this club."
With this result, Marseille missed the opportunity to take first place following PSG's draw against Lorient (1-1). At the end of this 10th matchday, OM sits 3rd in the Ligue 1 standings , two points behind Paris and one point behind Monaco, the new runners-up. Their next match is away at Auxerre (this Saturday at 9:05 PM), a bogey team for both OM and Roberto De Zerbi last season (two defeats).
